Schoolyard Greening Study

OVERVIEW

I completed this analysis as part of a schoolyard greening project at Studio-MLA. We were asked by the Metropolitan Water District to locate schools in need of greening based on social and environmental need, and to create typologies which the schools could implement.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Perform GIS analysis to determine schools in need of greening
• Work with supervisor to illustrate the six schoolyard typologies
• Explain the benefits of each typology using case studies and scholarly research
• Create graphs and statistics to illustrate schools in need within the MWD
• Compile a drought-tolerant landscaping resource list for use by schools
• Present findings to client

MAP INTERPRETATION

161 public schools in the Metropolitan Water District are located both within 1000 ft of freeways or highways, and within areas rated in the top 10% of pollution burden in the State of California by Cal EnviroScreen. These schools are at risk for both the highest burden of pollution and exposure to unsafe levels of emissions from freeways, posing an even higher health hazard to students and teachers.
